Harry Norman Earl Hobbs, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully at home in his sleep, with his devoted wife, Ruth, by his side. He was a beacon of love, strength and kindness, whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Harry was born August 22, 1950, in Edmonton, Alberta, to Harry and Dorothy Hobbs and was raised in both Calgary and Edmonton with his sister Barb and beloved dog, Bingo. He grew up with a passion for sports, excelling as a standout athlete in hockey & baseball. Harry also developed a lifelong love for the game of golf at an early age. One of his most cherished memories was the time spent at the family cabin at Sylvan Lake, where his grandfather, Earl Dodds, nurtured his enduring zeal and skill for golf—playing together at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club. He and Ruth continued their enthusiasm for golf at the Pauma Valley Country Club and Country Hills Golf Club—treasuring the amazing friendships they made within both close-knit communities. Harry also held a deep ardour for curling and spent many of his days at the Calgary Curling Club forging strong friendships.
Harry’s University career was marked by excellence and determination. He attended the University of Alberta where he earned his B.A. degree, majoring in Political Science and was an active member of his fraternity, Delta Upsilon. He later pursued graduate studies at the University of Calgary, where he served two terms as President of the University of Calgary’s Graduate Students Association and Board of Governors, cultivating his devotion to service. Harry was a lifelong learner and shared that with all of us.
Harry’s professional life was as impressive as his personal one. He had a long and storied career at Foothills Pipe Lines (now TC Energy), rising to the office of Vice President, Transportation and Public Affairs. He later served as Chairman of the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO), guiding the organization with vision and integrity. His leadership skills and commitment left an indelible mark on everyone he worked with.
Beyond his professional achievements, Harry was deeply involved in his community. He took great pride in leading various Calgary Stampede committees, serving countless hours to help make it the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”. Later he was a board member of several non-profit organizations including the Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO) and President of the Board at his home golf course, Country Hills Golf Club. His generosity, advocacy, and selflessness were evident in every aspect of his life.
His true joy was his family. Harry is survived by his loving wife, Ruth, his former wife Donna, his children Mark and Amanda (Jeff) and his grandchildren, Beckett and Sutton. He is also survived by his sister Barb (Doug), his aunt Marilyn, and many extended relatives in the Hobbs, Copot, Noble, and Mercer families.
The family want to thank Dr. Todd Anderson and Shannon Perry for their support and cardiac expertise, while always treating Harry as a unique individual and friend.
Harry’s legacy of love and compassion lives on in the hearts of his family. We will forever treasure his wisdom, guidance, unwavering support, and unconditional love.
A Celebration of Harry’s life will be held at the Calgary Winter Club, 4611 14 Street NW, on Saturday, August 24, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Harry Hobbs Memorial Fund at the Libin Cardiovascular Institute https://engage.ucalgary.ca/Harry_Hobbs.
