April 14, 1926 – October 8, 2012
The family of Hans Heller mourns the sudden death of our deeply loved father, stepfather, Opa and husband. Hans passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thanksgiving Day, October 8, 2012 after having enjoyed an earlier family gathering. A Calgarian since his immigration from Germany in 1951, Hans touched the lives of numerous people. He began his life in Canada as a carpenter, and later in his 30’s enjoyed a second long career as a teacher at Bowness High School until his retirement in 1989. Hans nurtured the development of the German Canadian School to become an accredited private school, receiving an award from the Alberta Department of Education for this accomplishment. After retiring, he enjoyed numerous travels abroad with his wife, Christine. He kept in touch with his family, neighbors, was an active volunteer for the Heart to Heart program and served on the board of directors of the German Canadian Senior Citizen Housing of Calgary for over 30 years. Grateful for his love and support are his wife, Christine; children, Brigitte McKenzie, Rosemarie (Larry) Heller, Peter (Susan) Heller, George Boelcke, Ellen (Chris) Boelcke and Christoph Boelcke; and grandchildren, Erin, Kyle, Annie, and Austin. Hans is predeceased by his first wife, Rotraut. We wish to thank the staff of the Colonel Belcher Seniors Centre, home care staff, Dr. Joyce and the many health care providers who cared for Hans. A Celebration of Hans’ Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4th Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. You are invited to share a joke, story or a fond memory. Memorial donations may be made directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 100 – 119 14 Street NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 or the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta, 10531 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton AB T5H 4K1 or plant a tree in Hans’ memory. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
