Gordon was born in Calgary in 1934. He was a true born and raised Calgarian, a title that not many hold. He attended school in the community of Kingsland, where he lived most of his adult life. In March of 1959 he began his career with Canada Post as a mailman delivering mail in rain, sleet, snow and often in freezing weather. As his career progressed he moved inside to one of the mail sorting facilities in Calgary and finished his career there after 31 years retiring in March 1990. He then took on the role of babysitter a couple of days a week watching over two of his grandchildren, driving them to school and their many after school activities.
Gordon married Helen Hamill in 1956 and although they later divorced they continued to be great friends. In the last couple of years Gordon would often visit Helen at her long term care facility.
He was a long-time member of First Church of the Nazarene and was a strong person of faith, who enjoyed reading his well-worn bible (laid to rest with him). One of his greatest attributes was generosity as was demonstrated in how he treated his family as well as his friends & neighbours
Gordon’s favourite hymn was The God on the Mountain:
Life is easy when you’re up on the mountain,
And you’ve got peace of mind like you’ve never known.
But when things change and you’re down in the valley;
Don’t lose faith for you’re never alone.
For the God on the mountain
Is still God in the valley.
When things go wrong,
He’ll make them right.
And the God in the good times
Is still God in the bad times;
The God of day
Is still God of the night.
We talk of faith when we’re up on the mountain,
But talk comes easy when life’s at its best.
But in the valley of trials and temptations;
That’s when faith is really put to the test
