Hermie (Evert) Hermanson of Calgary passed away peacefully on July 20, 2018 at the Colonel Belcher Care Centre at the age of 98 years. Hermie was born in Buchanan, Saskatchewan, on November 6, 1919.
During WWII, Hermie served in the RCAF as a pilot instructor in England and later as a night fighter pilot and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war he studied at the University of Saskatchewan and graduated in 1950 with a B.Sc. in Pharmacy. He worked in a pharmacy in Banff and several pharmacies in Calgary.
Hermie rejoined the RCAF in the early 1950s and served as a flying instructor and did a tour as an all weather fighter pilot flying CF100 jets. He retired from the Airforce in 1964.
Hermie then worked as a pharmacist for Morrison Drugs and the Colonel Belcher Hospital until retiring in 1983.
Hermie and Dora retired to Vancouver Island and enjoyed 29 years of golfing, curling and socializing. They spent many winters in Yuma, AZ and enjoyed several international trips. In 2012, they came back to Calgary to be closer to family.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years, Dora Wright; sister Doris Lundmark (Robert), son, Bradley (Lin Westermark); daughters, Shirley (Glenn Dawson) and Myrna (Harry Kruger). He will be especially missed by his 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Grant in 1975 and brothers, Alfred and Robert.
A Memorial Service will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4th Street NW, Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery), on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, Memorial donations may be made directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, 1403 - 29 St. N.W., Calgary, Alberta.
