Doreen Peterson passed away peacefully on October 5, 2023, at the age of 94 with her son and great-niece by her side. Doreen was born on April 3, 1929, and was the 2nd daughter of Stan and Elizabeth Rushton. Doreen grew up on a farm in the Verdant Valley area and she always loved the farm life. Doreen went to High School in Drumheller and later graduated from nursing school as a Registered Nurse. Doreen had a 40-year career as an RN working at the Holy Cross Hospital until its closure, she then transferred to the Rocky View Hospital, until her retirement in 1994. Doreen loved nursing and was well-known and respected within the medical community.
Doreen met her husband, Warren Peterson, at a dance while she was in training to become a nurse. It was love at first sight and resulted in a long and happy marriage until Warren’s passing in 2011. Doreen and Warren have one son, Dale. Dale moved home and was able to care for his mom for many years up until her passing. The Petersons loved family and were exceptionally close to Warren’s 6 siblings and their children, her sister Della and her 4 children, and Doreen’s many cousins. Doreen was known as “DoDo” by many of her nieces and nephews and her honorary grandchildren, Alessia, Gema, Sylvana, and Giuseppe Dimarzo.
Doreen was quite active throughout her life, she loved horseback riding and went on annual trail rides. She loved to ski, and she did both activities until she was well into her 70’s.
Doreen is survived by her son, Dale, her cousin, Kate Sanders of Stettler, and many nieces and nephews, and cousins, from both Warren and her sister Della’s family. She was close to, too many to mention, and she will be greatly missed by everyone that loved her.
Doreen was predeceased by her husband Warren and her sister Della Rowe, all of Warren’s siblings, and a special niece Connie Cowan.
We wish to thank the Doctors, Nurses and the Staff at Age Care Skypointe, who gave our beloved DoDo the best care during her final days. We couldn’t have asked for better.
