Derek was born on May 15, 1925 in Darlington, England and came to Calgary at the age of 3. He attended Crescent Heights High School, but joined the Navy before graduation. He served on a frigate in WWII then joined the Calgary Fire Department upon his return at age 21. His career spanned 30 plus years, serving as Fire Chief for the last 10 years. During that period, he earned a diploma in Business from University of Alberta and a degree in Fire Science from University of San Mateo. Upon retirement, he did consulting work in Singapore, Calgary and Coquitlam, then settled in Victoria, pursuing his passion for golf at the Uplands Golf Club. Dad lived life fully, loving his family, friends, sports, travel, leaving houses he built and a family cabin at Crimson Lake and many hilarious, tender memories for us to enjoy.
Derek is survived by his wife, Marie (nee Kamp) and her children, Shannon (Rick), Claire (John) and Dean (Madelline); he is also by his first wife and friend, Lorraine (Young); their children Owen (Marilyn), Marnie (Kim), and Theresa (Larry); sister, Donna (Neil) McNabb; his grandchildren and their spouses; as well as his great-grandchildren, making a village of 40.
We wish to thank all his care-givers at the Rockyview and Foothills Hospitals and the Colonel Belcher Carewest for their compassion and support.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Calgary Olympic Park in the Markin MacPhail Centre (88 Canada Olympic Road S.W., Calgary, Alberta), on Saturday, September 8, 2018 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
