Derek Michael Dyjur-McLean

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved son on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 26 years. Derek was a much-loved brother, cousin, nephew and friend.

Derek was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and lived in Calgary, Alberta. After high school graduation he went to Kwantlen University and Simon Fraser University, before moving back to Calgary. During University he worked as a lifeguard and swimming instructor.

Derek was a charismatic, energetic, mischievous spirit. Fitness was his passion and he was dedicated to being in peak physical condition. If he wasn’t swimming, he was stretching, walking, running, cycling or working out at the gym. He was enthusiastic about helping others achieve their fitness goals as well, encouraging them to improve. Derek was very social and loved chatting with friends and family and hanging out in person and online. He also enjoyed playing board games with family, such as Mysterium Park and Betrayal at House on the Hill.

Derek is survived by his mother, Patricia Dyjur, father Scott McLean and brother Adam Dyjur-McLean; his father’s partner Laura Montes de Oca and half-siblings Emi and Kian; grandmother Winnifred (Carlson) McLean; Aunt Christine, Uncle Dave, and cousins Jay (Lou) and Paul; Aunt Louise, Uncle Tom, and cousin Rachelle; Aunt Lorraine, Uncle Kevin, and cousins Brandy, Michael, Bek, Molly, and Jackie; Aunt Mary Ann and Uncle Nick, cousins Peter and Tom; Aunt Cheryl and Uncle Bob, and cousins Tina (Aaron), Dustin and Patrick; and Aunt Lori and Uncle Dave, and cousin Will. He was predeceased by his grandmother Marie-Thérèse (Forseille) Dyjur, grandfather Michael Dyjur and grandfather Donald McLean.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, November 4, 2023 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 pm

A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 10:00 a.m.

In light of Derek’s interests, we welcome guests to wear casual workout clothing if they wish.

In lieu of donations, please reach out to a friend and go on a walk with them.
