Derek Cooper

It is with great sadness that we announce that Derek Cooper lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on October 17, 2023 at the age of 87. Derek is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Veronica Cooper. Derek is also survived by his daughter Susan Partridge (Shaun), son Robin Cooper (Teresa), his five grandchildren Meaghan Partridge (Nico), Tristan Partridge, Rhys Partridge (Nadine), Steven Cooper (Sara) and Christine Cooper (Tyler) and two great grandchildren Riley and Teagan Cooper.

Derek, the youngest of three, was born in London to Dulcie and Sydney Cooper. At the age of two he moved with his family to a small village near Aberystwyth, Wales. Here he and his family lived during the war and Derek grew up in the beautiful Welsh hills. At the age of nine, after the war, the family returned to London, but retained the cottage they had called home during the war and the cottage remained a family favourite. Derek retained a life long love for the Welsh countryside and for the outdoors in general.

At the age of 18 Derek joined the British Royal Navy and enjoyed nine years of service as a Petty Officer travelling the world and having many adventures. While in the Navy, he met a beautiful young WRN named Veronica Johnston and the two were married in 1962 and went on to enjoy 61 years of marriage.

Following his Navy service Derek enjoyed a long career as an Electrical Engineer. During his career he made many lifelong friends.

In 1974 Derek and Roni moved to Canada and settled down in Calgary. Derek always loved the beauty of Canada, but his heart always remained in his beloved Wales.

Derek was an active man and loved the outdoors. He enjoyed many sports including golf, fishing, skiing, sailing and swimming. In his younger years he also played Rugby and Cricket. Derek was also an avid gardener and was always happiest outside.

Derek had a very close relationship with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved to spend time with family. He was always happy to lend a hand to both family and friends when needed.

A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Derek will be held at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Dr. S.E., Calgary, AB) on October 28, 2023, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
