Barbara Hunt passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at the age of 90, with her 3 children at her bedside. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Thurston, and will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her daughter Susan (Wieland), son Brian (Debbie), and son David (Samara) and their families.
Barbara was born and raised in Edmundston, New Brunswick. She attended Mount Allison University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. She worked as a Dietitian at the Royal Bank of Canada after completing her internship at The Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal. Barbara and Thurston met on a tennis court in Montreal and were married in 1950.
In 1954, they moved to Edmonton where they met a wonderful group of families that became lifelong friends. They moved back to Montreal in 1961, but were drawn West again to be near the mountains and with friends, returning to Calgary in 1968 and Edmonton in 1972. In 1989, they retired to Vancouver Island to fulfill a lifelong dream of living on the ocean. They enjoyed life on the coast until 2013 when they moved to Calgary to be close to family.
Barbara was a lifelong learner and loved to research and learn about everything from educational psychology to politics to bridge. She gave back by being very involved in many community organizations and boards. She was a voracious reader, perennially curious, and was passionate about her family, music, travel, golf, skiing, tennis and a lively debate.
In accordance with Barbara's wishes, a private family celebration of life was held.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the caregivers at Foothills Hospital (Unit 100) and Chinook Hospice for their kind and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Messages for the family may be left at www.southcalgaryfuneralcentre.ca.
