Lam, Anthony Ka Sing passed away peacefully at Foothills Hospital on Monday March 18, 2024, at the age of 89 years.
Anthony (Tony) Ka Sing Lam was born in Hong Kong on December 13, 1934, to Wai Ming Lam and Kit Hing Lam (nee Lo). As a teenager he was an active member of the Sea Scouts and competed as a swimmer for the team. Tony attended high school in Australia and later went to Montreal to attend pre-med and medical school at McGill University. In the summers, he worked for an agricultural research station in Lethbridge, Alberta where he met his wife Annie Sue Lynn Lam (nee How). They married on June 28, 1959, in Taber, Alberta. Annie accompanied Tony back to Montreal for his final year of medical school where they had Cynthia in 1960. The family moved to Toronto in 1962 for Tony’s first year of Medical Internship at St. Michaels Hospital where they had Colvin.
Tony felt Calgary was a prime place for a new doctor to start medical practice, so he moved his young family there in 1963 where Kevin was born in 1964 and Marvin in 1967. Marvin, being born 1 week before his birthday, was his birthday gift that year. Tony’s practice grew with the young city of Calgary and his roots in the Chinese and Medical community became deeply entrenched. He was a familiar face at the Foothills Hospital caring for patients there. Tony treated thousands of patients over a 50 plus year career and was the first person to see the face of the countless number of babies he delivered. Unique aspects of his practice included being an “airport” doctor for many years, traveling to Calgary International Airport whenever an overseas flight arrived. Tony also performed pilot’s and immigration medicals until he retired 8 years ago. Tony made the difficult journey to China, in the mid 70s, well before the country opened to the world, to learn acupuncture which he incorporated into his practice.
Over the years, Tony was generous with his time and knowledge, mentoring many doctors and medical students. He was also active in the Chinese community, which included volunteering as the Calgary Public Chinese School Principal for many years. He did have a few less demanding engagements such as judging the Miss Calgary Chinatown Pageant.
When Tony was not working or volunteering, he enjoyed travel, ballroom dancing, doing automotive repairs in surgical gloves and enthusiastically watching Chinese soap operas which he started soon after the first Betamax and VHS tapes were invented.
Tony is survived by his second wife Karen Lam (nee Leung), his sons and their families -- Colvin and wife Adora (children Mila, Maya, and Malia), Kevin and wife Pimmpon, Marvin and wife Heidi (child Abigail). He is also survived by his sisters Carol Pang and Shirley Chin. He is predeceased by his wife Annie and daughter Cynthia.
