Sheldon was born in Calgary on 21 April 1922; graduated from the University of Alberta in Honours Physics and married Marjorie Thompson in 1945; and then worked for Imperial Oil until his retirement in 1982. In retirement he and Marjorie travelled extensively; participated in Canadian Club; volunteered for the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics; golfed at Silver Springs Golf and Country Club; curled at the Calgary Winter Club; attended Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra concerts, study groups at St. David’s United, and Esso Annuitant hikes and wine appreciation evenings; donated to numerous charities; and enjoyed their grandchildren, great-grandchildren and wide circle of fabulous friends. He died in hospice on 15 December 2010. Sheldon was predeceased by his parents, Hugh Simpson Gibson and Isabel McMillan; and by two sisters: Anna Jeanette (in infancy), and Elizabeth (Betty) Carscadden. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his children and their spouses: (Andrew) Ralph Gibson and Mary (née Nix) of Cleveland, Ohio; Lorna and Victor Shapiro of Vancouver; Isabel Gibson and Ivan Wawryk of Ottawa; and Mary Gibson and Cathal Tunney of Edmonton; nine grandchildren and their spouses/partners: Mike and Heather Taschuk (Edmonton); Steven Taschuk (Edmonton); Judith and Blair Hammond (Vancouver); Kate Shapiro and Jonathan Hultquist (Vancouver); Kathleen Gibson and Mark Brailsford (Jerusalem); Rosemary Gibson and Alastair Crombie (Toronto); and Claire, Emma and Hugh Tunney (Edmonton); two great-grandchildren: Alexander Taschuk (Edmonton) and Aidan Hultquist (Vancouver); a sister-in-law, Doris Jewell, of Red Deer; and seven nieces and nephews in the Carscadden and Jewell families: Don and Jan Carscadden (Calgary); Anne Carscadden and Linda Pinch (Vancouver); Carolyn Carscadden (Vancouver); Barry and Marg Jewell (Orangeville); Barbara and Gregor Lee (Caroline); Tom and Mary Jewell (Sylvan Lake); and Dick and Marilyn Jewell (Sylvan Lake). He is also survived by the extended family members who enriched his life: Marilyn Willerton (Calgary); Udi and Esther Ogbue (Toronto); Eddie Cheng (Montreal) and Norma Wheeler (Ottawa); Eme and Ogo Ejiogu (Kuwait); and the eight grandchildren they collectively added to the fold. A memorial service will be held at St. David’s United Church, 3303 Capitol Hill Crescent N.W. Calgary on Monday, 20 December 2010 at 2:00 PM. The family asks that those wishing to make tributes do so by donating to the charity of their choice.
