Allan Charles Bancroft

December 14, 1928 – May 27, 2012

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Al Bancroft at the age of 83 after a brief illness. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of more than sixty years, Victoria “Torie”, his children Jim (Donna) and Gloria (Hugh Johnson), his grandchildren, Ryan, Matthew, Kathryn, Graham and Laura, his brother Donald and his sister, Joyce (Vic Benner), many nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends. Al was predeceased by his sisters, Jean (Bill Fleming) and Mary (Geoff Hook) and his brother Hugh (Mabel). Al lived life to the fullest. He loved his family, his friends, food and sports of all kinds, especially golf. He was an outstanding athlete and in his younger years played competitive football, basketball, softball and track and field. He was a scratch golfer for many years and competed in the Rileys Best Ball Tournament and many City, Provincial and Canadian amateur championships. He was an enthusiastic golfer for more than sixty years. His competitive and fun-loving spirit was always present and he will be deeply missed by his many friends at the Calgary Elks Lodge and Golf Club and the Calgary Curling Club. Al proudly worked for Shell Canada Limited in Calgary for thirty-five years, retiring as a Senior Vice-President. He made many life-long friends while at Shell and after his retirement he greatly enjoyed the Shell retirees’ luncheons and other events. A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER`S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W. (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, June 1, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers donations may be made directly to the Canadian Cancer Society, 200, 325 Manning Road N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 2P5 or Sarcee Carewest Hospice, 3504 Sarcee Road S.W., Calgary, AB T3E 4T4 or a charity of one’s choice.
