Larry was born in Byron Center, Michigan and lived there his entire life. He served in the Navy and studied at Western Michigan University. He served on the Byron Center School Board for several terms. He spent the majority of his working life in the insurance industry as a loss control professional, was an active member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) and was an agribusiness agent for Michigan Millers Insurance. He was a passionate family man who devoted his life to his marriage, his children, and his grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his brother, Richard and sister, Elaine. Larry is survived by Mary Lou, his wife of 60 years, children and grandchildren John and Judy Christian (Travis and Abby, Troy, Elizabeth); Sheryl and Tom Brink (Brett and Rachel, Nicole, Ryan); Gordon and Ranee Christian (Abby, Katherine, Jack) and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Janice (Fred) Souffrou; brother-in-law, Harvey Dykema; sister-in-law, Arlene Christian; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Harold (Celia) Teerink and Carol (Jerry) Dirks.
Larry was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church of Byron Center, where he served in many capacities and also had a love for the Big Star Lake Chapel where he served on the board. Larry was mission-minded and actively supported many mission organizations which he held dear. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, January 27, from 4-7 PM at Cook Funeral Home - Byron Center, 2067 84th St., Byron Center. The funeral will be held on Thursday January 28 at 11:00 AM at First Reformed Church of Byron Center in the worship sanctuary, 8425 Byron Center Ave. SW, Byron Center. The family will be available to meet friends and family prior to the funeral from 10-10:45 AM. The funeral service will also be available via livestream which can be accessed at www.frcbc.com (click the link “watch service online” on the homescreen) or at www.youtube.com and search for First Reformed Church of Byron Center. Masks and social distancing will be required during visitation and the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s memory may be directed to Words of Hope or First Reformed Church of Byron Center.
