05/17/1933 – 03/15/2014
Jerry was born on May 17, 1933 in Fannin County Texas, but spent his childhood in Arkansas, Texas and California. He went to high school in Orange, CA and played football and sang in the school choir, in which he was pretty good!
In 1952, Jerry joined the Air Force during the Korean War Conflict. He then met Billie, fell in love and married. Leanne was the first child of four, then came Bill, Joe and John.
When Jerry mustered out of the Air Force he moved to California and did odd jobs all over Southern California until one day, Garland Harrington helped Jerry get a job as a maintenance mechanic at the Hunt’s Foods Cannery in Fullterton, CA. Jerry excelled at his job and was promoted though the system. He worked for 32 years and decided to stop working and start living life. So, he moved up to McArthur where “no one works”; oh, except for the Lion’s. Jerry became involved with the Lions Club and found out that retirement can be a lot of work!
Jerry has always been an avid fisherman and hunter and he loved all the time that the children and grandchildren would come up and help him fish. His wife, Billie volunteered her time to different community functions and ran the gift shop at the Mayers Hospital for quite a while. When we lost Billie seven years ago, we all lost a friend. Jerry lost his best friend and that took a lot of wind out of his sails, but he kept going. Bad health got the best of him.
Now we have lost another good friend, dad, grandpa and great grandpa.
Jerry is survived by his children, Bill (Karen) and Joe; his grandchildren, Traci, Steven, Jamie, Greg, April, Kyle, Josh and Cody; his great-grandchildren, Tyler, Haley, Colton, Colin, Cashton, Brody, Bailey, Drew, Greyson and Hayden. He is preceded in death by his children, Leanne (Gary) and John (Vickie); and his grandson, Dean who was killed in Iraq.
There will be a visitation at the Lions Hall in McArthur, CA on Saturday, March 22, 2014 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm with a service immediately following at 1:00 pm. Graveside services will commence at 2:00 pm at the Pine Grove Cemetery in McArthur, CA with a reception following back at the Lions Hall.
