Wanda Merlene (Huggins) Warden, age 83, transcended peacefully on Sunday, March 27, 2011. Wanda was born in Joppa, Texas to Honnie and Irene (Bill) Huggins on September 8, 1927 and married to Dayton Reed Warden of Bertram, Tx for soon to be 65 years. Wanda’s priorities were God, family, church and community. She was Dayton’s substitute mail carrier for 23 years and a full time mail carrier for 3 years. Her talents were; decorating on a dime, hanging wall paper (one of the Paper Dolls), painting, furniture moving expert, working in the yard, florist, poet and saw each letter of the alphabet in its’ own unique color.
Wanda has been in service with the Lord since age 10. She was ordained as one of the first women elders in the Bertram Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1973. Ruby Barton was the other ordained elder. She was the moderator of the South Texas Presbytery in 1975. She was President of the Bertram Chamber of Commerce at two different times and directed the Girl Scouts Day Camp for 12 years in Bertram and Burnet. Wanda helped her husband Dayton run Warden’s Grocery in downtown Bertram for many years.
Wanda is survived by her husband of 64 years Dayton Reed; two daughters – Linda Kauffman and husband Randy of Giddings; Kathy Landreth and husband John of Mansfield; one son Dayton Warden, Jr. and wife Sharron of Bertram. Seven grandchildren – Jason Kauffman and wife Kristy of Giddings, Robyn Siegler and husband Michael of Giddings; Amy Remington and husband Reid of Roanoke, Nathan Landreth of Waco; Ben Warden and wife Kari of Shreveport Louisiana, Adam Warden and Wife Kailey of Austin: Eleven great-grandchildren – Chesney, Cade and DaCota Kauffman, Chase and Allie Siegler; Tristan Hollenbeck; Cali, Cason, Caleb and Conner Remington; Emma Warden.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents H.R. & Irene Huggins; sister – Johnny, brother – Ray, and grandson - Lane Hollenbeck.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at The Bertram Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Bertram with Reverend Daryl Johnson and Dr. Bob Shelton officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
