Royce was discharged from the Navy in the Port of Houston in 1948. He served on the Battleship New Jersey (BB-62), where he learned to cut hair. He opened a barbershop in Houston in 1952, but as a self -taught artist painted between haircuts. In the late 1960s his fame as a landscape artist, specializing in bluebonnets had spread and he began to devote equal amount of time to both endeavors. By the 1970s he was in galleries, and retired from the barber business to devote himself full time to painting large bluebonnet landscapes. In 1977 he moved to his current ranch in Burnet County and over the next thirty years won acclaim and awards for his landscapes, composed from landscapes he had seen around Burnet county and central Texas. He lived out his life in the landscape that he loved, and died with his boots on, in his pasture under a grove of trees.
