Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Millard Franklin Rushing and Emma Dean Horne Rushing, and his sister, Kathy. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 43 years, Christine Motl Rushing; his brother, Craig Rushing, and wife, Jimmie; two sons, Patrick Rushing and wife, Melissa, and Scott Rushing and wife, Whitney; and four grandchildren, Aiden Rushing, Judah Rushing, Eli Rushing, and Leah Rushing.
Larry grew up in Irving, TX and graduated from Irving High School in 1965. He went on to graduate from the University of North Texas in 1971, and later earned his Masters in Public School Administration from the same university in 1985.
He began his teaching career in Eagle Mountain Saginaw ISD at Boswell High School in 1971. He joined Irving ISD in 1974 as a science teacher and coach at Bowie Middle School, leading the football team to five city championships during his tenure as head coach. He later served as vice principal at both Crockett Middle School and Irving High School before retiring in 2001.
Larry and his wife moved to Burnet, TX in 2006 where he embraced retirement with a spirit of adventure and a warmth that made everyone feel like a friend. He spent his time traveling with his wife in their RV, camping, hiking, exploring the outdoors, playing golf, and tending to his yard. He also loved cheering on his grandchildren at their events and was a devoted fan of high school football, Dallas Stars hockey, and Texas Rangers baseball.
After his retirement, he grew to love singing and began performing as an Elvis impersonator at various parties, nursing homes, and events across Texas. In his later years, he developed a deep appreciation for songs by George Strait and other country artists, especially ballads and storytelling songs, which inspired him to teach himself the guitar.
He never met a stranger and had a gift for making friends wherever he went. Most recently, he enjoyed gathering with friends at the local YMCA for exercise, coffee, and good conversation.
Larry was a wonderful husband, father, papa, and friend. His strength, selfless service, and unwavering dedication to his family and friends leave a lasting legacy that will be cherished forever.
The family welcomes flowers or, for those who prefer, donations may be made to the Highland Lakes YMCA in Larry’s honor.
A Memorial Service will be held at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home for Larry on Friday, April 11, 2025 at 11:00 AM.
