Harold graduated from Lamesa High School in 1950 and attended Texas Tech University one semester that fall. He began working for the Gulf Oil Corporation in February 1951, but then joined the army in November 1952 to serve his country in Korea. His service ended in 1955, and he returned to the Gulf Oil Corporation. They credited his three years in the service as company time.
On May 11, 1956, Harold married Sarah Bowers in Lamesa, TX. Gulf Oil sent the new couple to Monahans, TX where he completed almost 40 years in the oil field retiring in the capacity of production foreman. The company commended him for his honesty and work ethic.
Harold and Sarah raised three children while in Monahans. They worshiped faithfully with the 3rd & Dwight Church of Christ where Harold served as a deacon.
In 1990 Harold and Sarah retired to the Texas Hill Country. They worshiped with the Buchanan Dam Church of Christ where Harold served the congregation as elder. Eventually they began worshipping with the Highland Lakes Church of Christ in Kingsland.
At the end of his life at age 91, Harold traded his Earthly home for the promised eternal home in Heaven on November 10, 2023.
He was 13 when he became a Christian and made living as a Christian his highest priority. Because of his love for the Lord and his faithfulness, he leaves a legacy of a life well-lived serving God to his greatest capacity.
Harold is survived by his wife of 67 years, Sarah, daughter Nancy Echols and husband David and their children Garrett Smith and wife Elisa, Natalie Smith, Kristen Dutton and husband Patrick, Kaylen Echols, and Cameron Echols. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."
