Donna Leotis New, age 84, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2020, at her home in San Antonio. She was born October 1935, in Burnet to Otis and Mayme (Barnett) Baker & grew up on the Baker ranch. She graduated from Burnet High School in 1953. Mom married Billy Charles New on October 14, 1955, in San Antonio while he was stationed there in the Air Force.
Mom was a special person who loved and cared for her family very much. Kind, considerate, thoughtful, sweet and witty. She was an observer, she watched over us and rarely intervened, but she was always there when we needed her to be. She was a nurturer, and comforted us when we needed it most. We learned many things from Mom. She taught us to “never say never” and if we did, she’d say with a smile “You’d better knock on wood” and “Once you’ve said it you can never take it back”. How you treated other people was very important to her and she had no tolerance for intolerance. She could rock any baby to sleep and was the most unselfish person there was.
Oh, how she could cook. Anything you wanted, and even the most basic meals were special. Her brothers and sisters meant the world to her and she always enjoyed spending time with them. She was devoted to her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was our rock.
Donna is survived by sons, Billy New (Donna) of San Antonio, Jeffery New (Irma) of San Antonio, Gregory New (Lola) of North Ogden, UT., Michael New (Grace) of San Antonio and daughter, Sherry Gray (James) of Arlington. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, brothers Barney Baker (LaDawn) of Burnet, Darrel Baker (Linda) of Lola, and sisters Pat Ellett (James) of Liberty Hill, Jan Friberg of Marble Falls, and Welda Williams (Wendall) of Brownwood. Many nieces and nephews survive Donna also.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Barney Baker, Darrel Baker, James Ellett, John Friberg, Wendall Williams, Michael Charles New, James Terry Gray and Joshua Sartain.
Donna will be laid to rest next to her husband at Post Mountain Cemetery at a time to be determined later.
