Donald Lloyd Evans of Burnet, Texas passed away peacefully at his home on July 4th, 2011. He was born December 26, 1929 to Joel Clifford Evans and Ruth Smith Evans of Freeport, Texas. He was part of the rescue effort during the Texas City Disaster of 1947, and graduated in the last class of Freeport High School the same year. He went on to serve in the U. S. Air Force during the Korean conflict, and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in electrical engineering. He traveled the world with his darling wife, Connie Faye, pursuing his career with Brown and Root, Intl. They lived and traveled throughout Europe, Africa and Asia.
The couple enjoyed square dancing, and Don was commended for his square dance calling in Europe and also back in Texas. They participated in a square dance that was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest dance ever under a single roof. Couples danced at the Astrodome in the shape of the state of Texas.
Don was also an amateur magician, and was a member of the prestigious “Magic Circle” in England. Family members fondly remember him performing illusions at grandchildren’s birthdays and other occasions.
He is survived by his sons Mark (Paula) of Highlands, Tex., Richard Smith of Burnet, daughter Vicki Black (Richard) of Eagle River, Alaska, and son Jason of Cedar Park. His grandchildren include Gary Morris (Amanda), Lisa Hughes (Carl), Angela Smith, Vikki Osborne-Smith, Tiffany Black, Hailey Heinz, Richelle Smith, Chanel Smith, Ariel Evans, Ricky Smith, Aryck Evans and Ashton Evans. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Malcolm and granddaughter Lauren Smith. Don is laid to rest at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 7, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Clements-Wilcox Chapel in Burnet. Interment will follow at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park.
