Andy was born in Lampasas on March 23, 1948, to Marcus Anderson and Annie Laverne Standard Feild. Roots ran deep for the Feild family name around the community of Lake Victor. Andy was part of the 5th generation on the ranch, with original homesteading occurring in 1854. Being the youngest of 4, and born several years apart from his siblings, Andy was loved by them as “Little Andy”. When time came for Andy to go to school in Burnet, as a boy, he said he could vividly recall disliking school customs, only for the sole reason he had to wear shoes to school. Andy grew up operating the ranch by horseback and farming the rocky black Lake Victor soil. Andy would tell stories of how hot the summers were when harvesting maize, and how it was a pleasant break when football two-a-days would begin.
Even from a young age, Andy was very involved with the school and the community. He was selected by the faculty as the 1965-1966 Best All-Around Male Student. Participation in extracurricular activities and his academic achievement were some of the factors considered when the faculty selected him. Andy served as a captain of the football team and as the President of the FFA. Upon graduating Burnet High School in 1966, Andy went off to John Tarleton College to pursue a degree in agriculture. However, God had a different plan for Andy. Andy left college and joined the United States Navy in 1968 and was stationed aboard a Destroyer as a Gunner’s Mate. Though Andy did not see any combat while aboard, he managed to lose half his thumb during a bad thunderstorm while at sea. Later in life, the grandkids would joke that a shark ate Pap’s (Andy’s) thumb while out at sea. The Navy may have gotten Andy’s thumb, but the rest of him left in 1972 to go back to Tarleton College. While in college Andy worked at a local dairy and rode saddle broncs for fun. Andy graduated in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and was a part of the first graduating class with the school becoming a university; Tarleton State University.
God took Andy’s path to work for the Texas Department of Agriculture. Soon after, Andy fell into the arms of the love of his life on a blind date. Martha Lucksinger stole Andy’s heart on that first date, and has kept it secured for 43 loving years. They created a family, memories, and a God led life. After 32 years with the State, Andy retired and continued to farm and ranch in North Central Burnet County.
Andy took pride in volunteering across multiple organizations. He was a member of Lake Victor Masonic Lodge # 1011, served in the Texas State Guard, volunteered as a Director of Competitive Events with Rodeo Austin’s Livestock Committee from 1981-2019 and was on the Board of Directors for Burnet County Fair and Rodeo where he served as President from 1988-2008.
In 1997 he was elected to the Board of Trustees for Burnet Consolidated Independent School District. He served as President from 2005-2023. The school district recognized his leadership and commitment to the community by honoring him with the “Andy Feild Spirit, Pride, and Honor Award of Distinction” awarded to a BCISD staff member or school board member who exemplifies characteristics that Andy possessed. Andy continued volunteering with those and other community groups until his year long battle with cancer.
Throughout Andy’s life and into his later years he enjoyed working cattle, cutting hay, wood working, campfire cowboy cooking, attending Mass, trips to Colorado hunting, supporting the Burnet FFA, attending school board meetings, “High Fiving” after Bulldog touchdowns, supporting the community of Burnet, and spending time with his family.
