My siblings and I were born in Levuka, Fiji and growing up in this little town, everyone knew Kina. We will miss his laughter, kindness and generosity. He brightened the lives of all who knew him and will be tremendously missed.

Ken is a very caring husband, father,  grandpa 
and big brother to his siblings.     

Al and I remember a trip we took together with Ken and Barbara to china in 2004.    We had a a lot fun, saw a lot, and laughed a lot.   He always had a big smile for everyone.    He will be dearly missed.

Shhit!! Fu_ _, everything no good. Darrell, Qi’s here!! Get stupid dog outta here!! Will miss those warm words from you uncle. If he’s not yelling at someone or something he’s not feeling good that day. Most of all will miss the ox tail and bitter melon dishes . Uncles loves all sports and news on tv. Everytime some sport is on tv on his side of the room.

Kina Ken Cheer.  He was a  great friend and neighbour, cheerful, full of fun and laughter, and very popular amongst the Levuka people.
We all miss him dearly.

We are very sorry to hear of the passing of our dear Levuka friend, 
Kina Ken Cheer.  He was a very nice friend and neighbour,   always cheerful, full of fun and laughter and very popular amongst the Levuka people.  We will miss him dearly.

We are very sad to hear about Ken's passing and cannot imagine the sorrow this is for his family and extended family.

Our parents and his relatives here in SF were very fond of Ken.  Memories of his big smile, his calm approach to everything in life, his kind and caring nature, his strength in navigating his family through many changes and hardships, and his love and pride for his wife, children and grandchildren will always stay with us.  We are blessed to have known him.  Those of his family who have preceded him will undoubtedly take care of him as he joins them.

We know that this is a difficult time for the family, but please also know that you are not alone and your SF family is here for you if you need anything. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.


The Wong family's  condolences to the Cheer family  .   Kina was our hero when we were growing up in Levuka .  He set the standard for the best stereo sound systems  and the latest  music of the day  in the early sixties. We used to visit him at King's Cafe  and enjoyed listening to his music collections in rock and roll , surf  music  , Elvis Presley ,Beatles ,The Ventures , Soul , Peter Posa etc.  The seventies arrived and the next  Kina adventure was a Honda 50 scooter , wow what a blast  riding with him thru town  and waving  to people as we go by. Kina never said no  whenever we wanted to go for ride and we would all line-up to get a turn .  Oh one more thing , he used to play accordion too  and would give us a short demo of a recognizable tune.  Kina's friends at the time were his poker buddies , Michael Young , Chonga  Lee, Samu Toa Young , Billy Sahai, Okomura , Fukuda, who  would  play poker every Sunday at the Pafco house or at Michael's place . Those were fond memories as I attended them also just to watch these boys having fun together  and  cracking jokes , gambling away and drinking beer .   The Cheer family left Fiji  in '74  that also  left a big hole in the town's culture .  Our family  migrated to Canada in '76  where we were warmly reunited with Kina and the Cheer family , who helped a lot in establishing  our stay in Vancouver . I will forever be grateful and  remember all the good times we shared  with Kina  and pray that his passing from this life will be greeted with open arms  in Heaven  for  all the roles he has played so gracefully as  a Big brother, husband, father  and grandpa  .  A special mention to his immediate family  Barbara, Darryl and Aaron ,  that our thoughts are with you  at this time and we share in your grief for the loss of  such a loving husband and father.   Farewell Kina and may your  spiritual journey  continue  unhindered  smooth sailing.    Condolences  from the Wong and Young family .

Very sad to learn of the passing of Ken (Kina) and we treasure the many happy memories we shared in Levuka, Fiji and when Kina and Barbara visited us in Auckland, NZ.

Mr. Cheer.  

He was the realest of all the Dads.

He spoke his his mind bluntly to us as to make sure we never mistook his words as light-hearted or unimportant.

He was with us when we were innocent kids, when we grew into rebellious teens, and when we matured to grown men.

I'll always remember you, Mr. Cheer, and I'll continue to do right by the family you leave behind.

Rest in peace, sir.


Uncle was a man full of wisdom. I will miss him and happy he is no longer suffering. Condolences to the entire Cheer family on behalf of the Ocol family.
