It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, Yau Fung Yim Har, Elizabeth on July 12, 2021 at the age of 94 years, in the Richmond Salvation Rotary Hospice, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. She was predeceased by husband Yau Ying Soong (d.1996), sons Simon Peter Hon Kan (d.2020) and Thomas Hon Ka (d.1976). She is survived by her loving family, children Rex Hon Sing, Christina Kwai Foon, Prescilla Kwai Chi, step-daughters Kwai Sheung, Kwai Yee, Kwai Yu, and their spouses. She will also be sadly missed by numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and many relatives and friends both in Canada and Hong Kong.
Our mother was born in Canton, China on December 2, 1927. She went through a difficult childhood filled with hardships from poverty and war, which explained her feisty and determined character. She went to Hong Kong in 1946 to marry our late father. Together they raised a very big family with limited resources. However, it did not stop her natural entrepreneur spirit in setting up the Tommy Garment Factory. Her sewing skills were no match…our school uniforms, dresses, suits and coats, all done without the help of a pattern. She was still sewing and knitting her own clothes up to her ripe old age. In recent years she was splitting her time between Hong Kong and Vancouver. Her sharp mind, up to the very end, had kept her on top of everything, current affairs, stock market, real estates and of course the daily dose of Sing Tao newspapers. She was not hesitant in giving out her own ideas and orders so earned her title “commander-in-chief”.
She was baptized in August 1956 and remained a devout Catholic who faithfully went to Mass everyday. It is hard to describe her in past tense but knowing she is now in a better place in the presence of God with no more sufferings. She will be forever in our memories.
A requiem Holy Mass will be celebrated on July 28, 2021, 11 a.m., at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church, 5771 Granville Avenue, Richmond, B.C. followed by cremation at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 3789 Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby at 1 p.m. A reception dinner will be held at Red Star Seafood Restaurant, #2200, 8181 Cambie Road, Richmond, B.C. at 6 p.m. Please confirm your attendance if you plan to go to the dinner. Prayers service will be offered on July 27, 2021, 6 p.m. in the same church.
Flowers are gracefully declined but if you so wish, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
