After years of living with metastatic endometrial cancer, Minny Yong, aged 67, passed away peacefully on May 18th, 2020. She was born on September 12th, 1952 in Kudat, Malaysia. Shortly after immigrating to Canada in April 1976 to join her high school sweetheart and dearest love, she married Chi Fatt ‘Richard’ Yong on June 12th, 1976.
Minny will be best remembered for her strength, compassion, and love. She was an amazing mother to her two sons and was always happy and willing to give everything she could to her family. She was taken from us far too soon, but her memory will forever be an inspiration to everyone who knew and loved her.
Being of humble origins, Minny never took things for granted and would always be willing to share what she had with those in need. This led her to signing on with the Vancouver Aboriginal Child & Family Services Society where she and Richard provided a home and family to 41 different children over 23 years from 1996 - 2018. She loved all these children like she did her own, and as we all grieve her loss, Minny’s legacy of kindness and care will live on in the lives of all the children and families she had such a profound impact on.
Minny is survived by her husband Richard, her two sons and their wives Donald and Bonnie, Alex and Gloria and her grandchildren Madison, Sarah, Jeffrey and Mackenzie. She loved all of us with all her heart and we will be eternally grateful for all that she provided and her unconditional love.
Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic we will be having a small and restricted funeral service on Saturday June 27th where Minny will be laid to rest at Oceanview Cemetery, 3883 Rumble St, Burnaby, BC attended by her immediate family and closest friends only.
In lieu of flowers, Minny asked her friends and loved ones make donations to the two charities that meant the most to her;
BC Children’s Hospital
http://www.bcchildrens.ca/donate
BC Cancer Foundation
http://www.bccancer.bc.ca/donate
Our family greatly appreciates all donations made in Minny’s name as it will best honour her memory and carry on her legacy of love and care for those in need.
