It is with a broken heart that I share the news of my son’s death. Shamus passed away on Thursday, June 18th, 2020 in Vancouver at the age of 31. He was predeceased by his grandfather Kevin Mulhern (Poppy). He is survived by his grandmother Theresa (Nanny), me - his mom Patricia, his aunts Maryann, Shannon (Chris), and Georgina, his uncles Noel, John (Mai), and Kevin, cousins Katie, James, Charlotte and Leah, his cousin/godfather Michael (Percy), numerous family members of Mulherns and McEacherns, and his special friend Marcela.
Shamus was very close to his grandparents having lived with them for the first few years of his life. Nobody loved him more than his grandparents. He attended Shaughnessy Elementary and then attended Vancouver College in high school. Although he graduated from Killarney Secondary, he always considered VC his high school. Being a Mulhern, sports were very important to Shamus. He loved golf (could drive a ball over 300 yards) and basketball. Shamus was also a huge Kobe Bryant fan. He was a quiet, gentle child who teachers and coaches enjoyed. He had a good sense of humour combined with a sensitive side. He became a barber in the past year and even coloured and cut his nanny’s and my hair.
Mental health and addiction issues plagued my son for much of his adult years. Many people tried to help Shamus but he lost the battle on June 18th. I love and thank you all for your efforts. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Saints Peter and Paul Parish; 1430 West 38th, Vancouver, on Tuesday, June 30th at 11:00 am. The mass will be on Zoom. Please contact Georgina at g.sassy1@gmail.com for information. In lieu of flowers and casseroles :), donations to the Salvation Army Harbour Light would be greatly appreciated. Shamus ended up there a few times. They are a great bunch of people working on the frontlines. Please contact Kaine Rice at 604-314-3208 for Memorial Donations. I want to thank all the people who have reached out with love and support during this time. I also want to thank my Principal Natasha and the entire Jamieson community. May you find peace at last, Honeybaby. xo Mom
