August 6, 1924 - August 2, 2015
Ron was a 'Vancouverite'! For 90 years, he lived and worked in his favourite city. He was born at VGH and raised in Kerrisdale, attending Maple Grove, Point Grey and Magee. Initially, studying dentistry (pre med) at UBC, Ron changed faculties and obtained a Bachelor of Commerce Degree. It was the right choice. He entered the family business,Vancouver Stationers (founded in 1917). As president, he expanded upon this business and created several companies, including Vancouver Business Forms, Vancouver Office Furniture, Vancouver Envelopes, Weber's Patio Shoppe (West Vancouver) and Vancouver Business Systems (VBS). Until age 85, he managed VBS, which reflected his interest in real estate opportunities.
Ron's family was forever changing. In 1950, he married Daphne McColl and together they had two daughters, Nancy and Leslie. In 1968, Ron married Helen Thomsett and Brian, Helen's son became a part of his clan. For 40 years, Ron and Helen were a great pair, spending fun-loving times with their family, their friends and together, as a couple in Rancho Mirage, CA during the winter months. Ron was a devoted son and grandson, a loyal brother, a loving husband, a wonderful father and grandfather.
Ron's passion was 'Sport' and he thoroughly enjoyed a little 'friendly' competition! In the 1940s and early 50's, he was a distinguished basketball player. Ron played on the UBC Thunderbirds and the Canadian championship teams of the Vancouver Clover Leafs. He was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame on two occasions, as a member of the 1945/46 UBC Men's Basketball Team (1984) and the 1948/49 Clover Leafs Basketball Team (1993). Ron was inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame (1997) and recently, into the BC Basketball Hall of Fame (2015). Retiring from basketball in his 20s,he coached on a volunteer basis in the community.
Ron discovered another game-Squash. He became an accomplished player and competed successfully in tournaments throughout the Pacific Northwest. Spending more time in sunnier climates, Ron changed his squash racquet to a tennis racquet, first, playing singles in a competitive manner and then playing doubles until 80. He was a member of the Vancouver Racquets Club and a lifetime member of the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club, where he sat on the board for several years. Ron was elected as a member of the Jesters Club, an international club of 3,000 squash players and other sportsmen.
Ron did things his way! He fully embraced 'living and playing'. He placed great importance on building and maintaining relationships and friendships. Ron was known as 'the boss' to many, but he was a partner, a mentor and a guide as well. He was the patriarch - the rock - and took great pride in providing, protecting and supporting his family, his loved ones. Ron was 'one of the boys' with a keen sense of locker-room humour! He was a loyal and trustworthy friend. Ron was an athlete, a 'team guy at heart' who valued above all else the two components of sport -fair play and camaraderie.
Ron will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Nancy Arbuckle (John), his step-son, Brian Thomsett (Shirley) and his granddaughter, Hilary Weber Hall. Predeceased by his wife, Helen Weber, his parents, Oliver and Margaret Weber, his sister, Jean Weber and his daughter, Leslie Weber Hall.
We thank all of those who cared for Ron so compassionately, in particular his physician and friend, Dr. Lyall Levy, Dr. Merrick Tosefsky and the personnel at South Granville Park Lodge. We extend our heart felt gratitude to Ron's special care companions - Nancy, Rosale, Ada, Lydia, Tigist,Lily and Vilma.
