Martin passed away on December 23, 2011 at Royal Columbian Hospital following a brief illness. He was born on November 23, 1924 in Stubicka Slatina, Croatia. He served in the Croatian Army during WWII and then worked in a drug manufacturing plant. He also learned cabinet making and worked at that as well. He married Bernarda on December 31, 1951 and would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this week. They had one son, Steve, and in 1968 the family moved to Canada, settling first in Edmonton and then a year later in Vancouver. In 1975, the family built a house in Burnaby and Martin resided there until his death. He worked as a cabinet maker for BC Millwork for 20 years, until his retirement in 1988. Martin was an avid outdoorsman in his earlier years, enjoying camping, fishing and hunting with his son, brother and friends. He is survived by his wife Bernarda, son Steve (Linda), grandson Martin, sisters Stefica and Ljubica, brother Marijan (Ana), niece Gordana (Mike), nephew Robert (Debbie) and numerous relatives in Croatia. He was predeceased by his mother Zora in 1998 and brother-in-law Joe Deak in 2009. Viewing will take place on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Forest Lawn Funeral Home (3789 Royal Oak Avenue, Burnaby) from 5pm - 7pm. Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, January 5, 2012 at 10 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Parish (3105 E. 1 Avenue, Vancouver). In lieu of flowers, a donation to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
