On Thursday January 12 Martha Ida (Redlich) Rothenberger beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away at the age of 96. Martha, daughter of John Redlich and Emma (Miller), was born on June 10, 1926 in Biggar, Saskatchewan. She married in 1947 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. In 1944 Victor Rothenberger, Lutheran Theological Seminary student, did his internship at the Biggar parishes. At this time Martha and Victor met. Less than two weeks after being ordained Victor and Martha were married on July 9, 1947. They were in active ministry forty-one years, over twenty years at Martin Luther Church until retirement in September 1988.
Martha was dedicated to being a Pastor’s wife. She opened her home to individuals and groups and was “social secretary” to Victor keeping track of appointments and services. In addition to her full time duties as Pastor’s wife and raising 4 children, Martha studied and obtained her License Practical Nursing Degree in 1969 while in Dayton, Ohio. She worked at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton and then at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver when the family moved back to the same parish they had served from 1950 to 1956 - Martin Luther Church. Martha and Victor were married for 53 years when he passed away in 2002.
Martha was predeceased by her husband Victor and daughter, Sharon (Rothenberger) Thomson. She is survived by her children Wayne (Jean), Debbie (Joe) Mick, and Richard plus eleven grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She is deeply missed by all her family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Martin Luther Church in Vancouver on Sunday January 29 at 12 noon with internment at Ocean View Cemetery. Memorial donations to Martin Luther Memorial Fund.
