Our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Linda An, passed away on July 13th, 2021 at the age of 95. Born on February 14th, 1926, she was the sixth child born to a family of nine children in Suzhou, China.
Linda and her soon-to-be husband, Andrew An, fled China in 1949 during the Communist takeover. They stayed briefly in Hong Kong, and later moved to Taiwan where they married in 1950. In 1967, they immigrated to Vancouver, B.C. Canada for the love of their three children - Abe, Amy and Alice.
A woman who feared no challenges in her new surroundings, Linda attended night courses and earned a degree in accounting. For many years, she thrived as a successful accountant.
In 1978, Linda lost her loving husband Andrew to cancer.
Her son Abe recalled their drives to Oakridge in the 80’s. As she admired the newly built homes, she would comment, “I will never have the opportunity to live in a house like this.” Years later, she tore down her aging house, and built the dream home that she would live in for the next 31 years.
Linda would go on to have five grandchildren and one great-grandson. She ensured they all experienced the traditional Chinese family meal - whether it be cooked at home, or indulged in Vancouver’s restaurants. While the restaurants were fun, her home cooked meals were by far superior.
In her later years, Linda proved herself to be courageous and tenacious by conquering three bouts of cancer, heart issues that led to a pacemaker implant, a stroke, a broken wrist and a hip replacement. She truly embodied the spirit of a tiger - her Chinese zodiac.
Linda is survived by her three children, Abe, Amy and Alice, five grandchildren, Melissa, Angel, Ryan (Chrissie), Jennifer (Keith) and Drew, and great-grandson, Drew. She will be remembered for her love, generosity, courage, infectious laugh and cooking that was filled with the tradition and pride of her heritage. She will be forever loved, and remembered in our hearts.
