Kwok Ying is lovingly survived by her husband, Yick Hung Chan, her children Angela, Kori and Eleanor, her granddaughters, Tai and Emma, her sons-in-law, Carl and David, and her brother, Tak Kuen.
Kwok Ying was born in 1936 in Zhongshan, Guangdong, China. Ying started working at a young age, gaining skills and holding multiple jobs. With selfless generosity, she quietly gave her parents her earnings to help send her beloved brother, Tak Kuen, to university in America, so he could have opportunities that were not available to her.
Following a move to Hong Kong, Ying married her childhood sweetheart, Yick Hung Chan, in 1959. Their first two children, Angela and Kori, came soon after. They immigrated to Canada in 1965 in hopes of offering a better future for their children. Their third child, Eleanor, was born a year later. Ying and Hung sponsored many relatives and friends to immigrate in those early years, then opened their home to each, until they could get established in a new land. Ying worked as a seamstress for over 30 years in Vancouver. She and Hung fulfilled their dream that each of their children have a university education.
Ying thrived on happy, social times. With a young family, large weekend gatherings with family and friends were a regular occurrence. In her later years she could be found doing Tai Chi at Queen Elizabeth Park, singing in a choir, dancing with a troupe, actively involved in the Zhongshan Allied Association, attending church, doing charity work, mall walking, and caring for her granddaughters, Tai and Emma. A skilled cook, she was always preparing Chinese delicacies, to the delight of everyone around her.
Through her last years of declining health, Ying’s gentle sense of humour, uncomplaining nature, and strength of soul remained true.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, May 25th, at the Chapel Courtyard at Ocean View Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the Chan family asks that donations be made to the Richmond Hospital Foundation. Ying was well cared for by many kind doctors and nurses at Richmond General Hospital over the years.
