“The sacrifice of one generation is the foundation of the next.” — Chan Family
King Lurk Chan passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025, at St. Vincent Hospital. Born in Hong Kong on January 8, 1942, King led a life defined by courage, resilience, and deep devotion to his family.
In 1976, King made the bold decision to leave behind a high-paying job at Cable and Wireless Ltd in Hong Kong to pursue a new life in Canada. He arrived in Toronto with his wife and four young children, carrying little more than hope and limited cash to their name. After 6 months in Toronto, the family longed for warmer temperatures, and he divided the remaining $600 they had and set off alone to Vancouver in search of new opportunities.
Through hard work as a carpenter and cook, King eventually laid down roots in Vancouver and reunited the family. Less than a decade later, their determination paid off. Together, they launched a seafood business that became a cornerstone of the Asian community throughout the 1980s and early ’90s. Revered for its quality and freshness, the business helped lift the family from modest means to a more stable life—opening the doors for his children to pursue higher education and greater opportunity. To this day, community members from that era still remember King Lurk Chan as a warm, familiar, and respected figure. Few could forget his bright smile and unmistakable charm.
King is survived by a large and loving family, including his children and grandchildren—all of whom were an important part of his life and who continue to carry forward his values of perseverance, generosity, and quiet strength.
An evening visitation for King will be held Tuesday, April 22, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, BC V5J1A4. An urn placement ceremony will occur Monday, April 28, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM at Ocean View Funeral Home & Burial Park, 4000 Imperial St, Burnaby, BC V5J 1A4.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who have offered their love and support during this time, and to those who remember King for the life he lived, the relationships he built, and the impact he had on those closest to him.
To honor his memory, the family kindly requests donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in place of flowers.
