Johnny Hoy Hong Cheng (age 84) passed away peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital on Friday, March 30, 2018 surrounded by his wife and children. He was a beloved husband to his wife Kathy of 49 years; a devoted father to his children, Tricianne (Kenji), Tiffany (Jason), and John; and a loving Gong Gong to his grandchildren Maya, Kyle, Chloe, Lauren and Owen. He is also survived by his sisters Rose Wong, Betty Chung, Rita Cheng, Fely Chin; and brother Tommy Cheng. Johnny was predeceased in death by his brother Jimmy Cheng, and sister Lily Chiong.
Johnny was born in China on January 8, 1934, but lived most of his life in the Philippines together with his mother, father, and seven siblings. He met his wife Kathy and married in March of 1969. The day after they married, Johnny and Kathy made the courageous decision to leave their families in the Philippines for a brighter future in Vancouver, BC, Canada. There they would establish their roots and raise their family. His first job was working for an accounting company in Vancouver’s Chinatown. With no formal education, Johnny used his aptitude for learning and strong work ethic to teach himself accounting. His determination and innate sense of entrepreneurship ultimately lead to success when, twelve years later, he started his own practice, Johnny Cheng & Associates. He dedicated himself to his employees and clients for thirty-six years, until he retired in 2017.
When not working, Johnny enjoyed travelling with his wife and friends to places around Europe, Asia, and South America. He also loved playing Mah Jong, being an all-around handyman, going to the Casino and eating out with friends and family. Most of all, he loved being a Gong Gong to his grandchildren. Johnny will be dearly missed.
