With heavy hearts, we share the passing of James Edward (Jim) Bain on April 22, 2024. Preceded in death by his beloved wife Diane, Jim is survived by his cherished daughter Michelle, son-in-law Michael, and grandson Maxwell, who brought immeasurable joy to his life. He leaves behind sisters Shirley and Lynda, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A true Vancouverite, Jim was born to Olive and Alexander Bain in November 1947. He enjoyed a happy childhood in East Vancouver, which included soccer, baseball, and Scouts, and a strong connection to family. From Vancouver Tech to Vancouver Community College, where he met Diane, his journey was marked by dedication and warmth. Joining Canada Post in the late 1960s, Jim's career flourished, earning him the affectionate moniker "Jim Sook (Uncle Jim)." His contributions extended beyond the workplace, fostering lifelong friendships and a commitment to preserving Canada Post's heritage through the Van Fraser Heritage Club. He built up the Postal archives and enlightened people with his well-researched and entertaining presentations. He also authored a high quality newsletter and supported the Santa Letter Program. His interest in Canada Post veterans led to many years of Remembrance Day events and highlighted many deserving stories.
An active member of the Scottish cultural community, Jim's leadership as Grand Chief of the Sons of Scotland (SOS) Benevolent Association was transformative. His innovative spirit and dedication led to the establishment of the joint SOS/Kidney Foundation Walk and elevated the BC Highland Games to new heights. He was easily identifiable by his big hat and green Mackay kilt at the games. A noted strong and engaging speaker, Jim led the toasts at Robbie Burns Dinners and volunteered for many years teaching public speaking skills to young cadets. Together with Diane, Jim embarked on numerous journeys across Canada, fostering connections and spreading goodwill. With Michelle, Michael and Max, Jim visited Scotland for the trip of a lifetime.
An eternal optimist, Jim's passion for life was infectious. He served as a pillar of strength and support for those around him, always eager to share stories of his beloved grandson Max. His departure leaves a profound void in the lives of all who knew him.
A celebration of Jim's life will take place on May 25th, 11 am, at the Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby.
