Harry was a decorated World War II pilot who flew 96 combat sorties in a Typhoon Fighter Bomber and was awarded the “British Distinguished Flying Cross” . For his contribution to the liberation of France he was later honoured by France as a “Knight of the Legion of Honor”.
He was a Correspondence-schooled Mechanical Engineer working the last 32 years of his career for MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. – 17 years as Chief Engineer of a large sawmill. During his tenure with MacMacmillan Bloedel Harry was involved in the design and construction of saw mills in Port Alberni and Naniamo. He was also Project Engineer of the Powell River sawmill reconfiguration during the construction of Kraft mill in 1966.
He was a renowned Aviculturist, a member of the “Aviculture Hall of Fame” and a recipient of the “American Pheasant & Waterfowl Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award”. He specialized in raising endangered pheasant species and was successful in being the first to raise several species in captivity.
In retirement he was a Tetra Society of North America Volunteer who had designed and built 367 mechanical devices to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
His Volunteer work has been recognized with the
“Tetra Society Lifetime Achievement Award”, the
“British Columbia Community Achievement Award” and
Canada’s “Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers”.
He was pre-deceased by his wife Hazel in 2004 and leaves behind two daughters, Roberta (John) and Christine (Ted) 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
