George passed away peacefully at Vancouver General Hospital after a short illness. He was the only child of Kenneth and Jennie Crawford (nee McAnelly) and grew up in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. He was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (nee Bell) in 2003 and his son Donald in 1962. George is survived by his daughters Deborah Greene (Garry) and Janet Nehera (John), his four grandchildren, Michelle Kurtz (Jason), David Greene, Heather Nehera, Ian Nehera, and his great granddaughter Isla Kurtz.
During WWII, George’s engineering studies at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon were temporarily interrupted by his service as an officer with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. After returning to Canada, he moved to Regina where he met Dorothy Bell. They were married June 10, 1950 in Meadow Lake.
After starting married life in Regina, George and Dorothy moved to Edmonton for a few years and the settled in Vancouver in 1957. Here George and Dorothy adapted readily to life on the coast and were founding members of the Arbutus Club of Vancouver. George enjoyed a two decade career at the B.C. Research Council at U.B.C. before joining the Western Transportation Advisory Council until his retirement in 1981. In 1983, he and Dorothy purchased a cottage near Sechelt and enjoyed many visits there on the waterfront.
After moving to the O’Keefe senior’s residence in 2003, George divided his time between the cottage, activities at the O’Keefe, and travels in Canada and abroad. He loved classical music, played his piano daily, and entertained his fellow residents at the O’Keefe with music. He was physically active and particularly enjoyed walking. George was a very social person with a dry sense of humour who touched the lives of many people and he will be sorely missed.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Celebration for George at 2:00pm on Friday, November 4th at Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby.
Donations to BC Children’s Hospital in lieu of flowers are appreciated.
