Frederick Siu Chung Young was born in Foshan, Guangdong, China, the seventh child of thirteen brothers and sisters. His parents had become Christians through the witness of missionaries, so Fred grew up attending church. The family migrated to Macau to escape the war during his primary school years, and then eventually settled in Hong Kong where he received his secondary education at King’s College. It was here that he met his three best friends with whom he remained close throughout their lives. Fred excelled at school, and though he had to stop his formal education after Form 4 (Grade 10) to work to support his family, he studied on his own and successfully completed all of the matriculation exams in the same year as his peers. He applied and was accepted into the school of architecture at a university in Australia, but again had to give up that dream to continue to work to support his family. Nonetheless, he diligently made the most of every opportunity to learn new skills and prove his abilities, which led him to eventually work in the Hong Kong Lands Department. During the years of struggling to establish a career, God had blessed him with a Christian wife, an amazing answer to his prayer. The Lands Department sent Fred to study Land Management at the University of London, so he left his wife, Anita, and his two-year-old daughter, Winnie, and newborn son, Greg, waiting for him in Hong Kong. Then, completing his studies in a year, he returned home and almost immediately prepared the family to immigrate to Vancouver, Canada in 1969.
In Canada, the local Chinese Christian church became the family’s stable source of community and support during the difficult early immigrant days of adapting to life in a new land, where Fred worked to gain local accreditation, work experience and professional recognition, moving from Vancouver to Calgary and back again. Fred’s faith in God grew as he learned to rely on Him through all the challenges. He also faithfully studied the Bible and served in different leadership positions in the church.
In serving the church, his giftedness in academics and teaching was affirmed and it became his spiritual calling and vocation. In obedience, he left the lucrative private sector closing his own consulting firm, and became an instructor and the program coordinator of the Real Estate Investment Analysis program at Langara. While working full time, he also pursued, first, a Master of Adult Education from Western Washington University, and then a PhD in Adult Education at Nova Southeastern University, and finally, a Master of Divinity at Regent College. Equipped with these academic credentials, he took early retirement and prepared for God to open ministry doors for him to return to Asia.
After serving in different capacities in Hong Kong, he eventually became a volunteer lecturer of Christian Education at the Alliance Bible Seminary in Cheung Chau Island, Hong Kong. With his wife by side, Fred spent the happiest nine years of his life ministering to the students there. Then, due to health issues, they returned to Vancouver in 2009, where he continued to teach and preach in local churches. Many students, and brothers and sisters who have received his ministry have expressed how blessed they have been because Fred was faithful to God’s calling.
In 2018, Fred experienced his second stroke, and he became too weak to serve, but he continued to enjoy happy times with his family and watched his four grandchildren grow up to be wonderful God-loving young adults. His life testifies that living in pursuit of obedience to God is more blessed than living in pursuit of one’s own ambitions.
