Mr. Lam was born in Guangzhou, China in 1924. Growing up, he had to endure much hardship having lived through the Second World War, which forced him to move around quite a bit at a very young age. It was then he learnt to be very self-dependent and picked up great survivor skills. Mr. Lam self-taught most things in life when education was considered “luxury” at the time. He’s the ultimate “handyman” – as he pretty much knows how to fix everything on his own. He was always proud of all the “projects” he created & finished.
He met his wife while helping out with her family business in Hong Kong. Together, they have one child Jennifer. Since her birth, they spent every moment of their life together as a small family of three. Mr. Lam later joined Cathay Pacific Airlines where he eventually retired from, after 14 years of loyal services.
In 1991, the Lam family moved from Hong Kong to Vancouver Canada to pursue a better life for their daughter. While the Lams’ English language skills were limited, it did not stop them from enjoying the new life in Vancouver. Mr. Lam started going to English class, cooking class, outings, short trips, garage sale, grocery shopping, cycling, swimming…you name it, he would have taken part in it – often times with the company of his beloved wife. After Jennifer moved to San Diego California upon her wedding, Mr. Lam continued to enjoy retirement with his wife, and spent many years caring for Mrs. Lam who unfortunately suffered from Parkinson’s. When Mrs. Lam passed away in 2007, Mr. Lam started joining local church activities, got baptized, and continued to participate in as many community events as much as he can.
In 2014, he moved into Icelandic Harbor, an Assisted Living Facility, where he quickly became one of their most favorite and popular residents – due to his happy-go-lucky nature, always wearing a smile on his face and always remembers to say “thank you”. As his health started to deteriorate, he moved to Fair Haven Vancouver Lodge, a long term care home, in March 2020. It was two weeks before the pandemic. With the lock down in the last two years, he managed to continue to make the best out of the situation and enjoy his daughter’s frequent visits during this time. The close bond between the two is something she will always treasure.
Mr. Lam is survived by his daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Dave.
