Celina Wong passed away in Hong Kong on 14 November 2022 at the age of 76. She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Peter Wong, their two children Edmund (Carol), Sharon (Casey) and grandchildren, Franklin, Avery and Mirei. She will also be missed by her extended family and dear friends.
Celina was born in Hong Kong on 12 September 1946 but spent her formative years in Macau. She met Peter in 1968 while working as a Secretary in HSBC’s Computer Services Department. Celina had a great sense of adventure and her love for travel began when she spontaneously moved to and worked in Toronto, Canada for one year in 1969. While overseas, she promised herself that she would return to reside in Canada one day having fallen in love with the country. She eventually returned to Hong Kong, married Peter and, as newlyweds, moved to Kaduna, Nigeria for Peter’s work. There, she lived for over three years where she gave birth to their son Edmund before fulfilling her promise to herself and moving to Vancouver, Canada in 1975, where their daughter Sharon was born.
Celina was proud of her academic achievements, earning both a Hong Kong Management Association Diploma in Management Studies with distinction and a Master of Business Administration at Macquarie University, all the while working full time and parenting two young children. She excelled at organizational management and was General Manager at Hong Kong law firms Mayer Brown JSM (formerly Johnson Stokes & Masters), Tory Ducharme Lawson Lundell, Robert Wang & Co. and, until her retirement in 2003, Tsang Chan & Wong.
It was after retirement where Celina fully devoted herself to charity and volunteer work. She was an active member of the Discovery Bay Catholic Community, acted as English Secretary of Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SSVP) HK Central Council and was founding Chairperson of SSVP Discovery Bay, the community where she lived for over 30 years. With SSVP, she tirelessly volunteered her time to pay visits to the needy and was often joined by her husband and family. Celina felt immensely rewarded and blessed to be able give back to those who were less fortunate.
Celina was a doting wife, affectionate mother and grandmother, caring sister, conscientious colleague, and empathetic friend. Her sudden departure leaves an emptiness, but we take solace that she is now resting with the Lord.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, please consider a donation to Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Hong Kong Chapter by way of bank transfer to HSBC 002-244432-001, with notation “In memory of Celina Wong”.
