Bich Loan was born in ChaoYang, in the GuongDong Province of China, on March 16th, 1937. She fled China with her family to Vietnam during the Japanese invasion. In Vietnam, she met her husband Thuc Lam. They lived poor, but as their family grew, so did the success of their cotton and nylon business. They had 5 children, two sons: Sheldon and Wilson, and three daughters: Joanna, Muoi and Jennifer. She favoured boys like all traditional Chinese families, but she loved all her children very much.
Bich Loan was a devoted wife and mother who lived a humbled life, despite the success of their family business. She would often take care of the less fortunate children in the neighbourhood, ensuring they were well fed and giving them money when they were in need.
In 1981, Bich Loan and her family had to flee their home, once again. They escaped the oppressions of Vietnamese Communism, to start a new life in Canada. There, her children expanded across North America, where they established roots in Winnipeg, Mississauga, San Francisco and San Jose. She remained in Winnipeg and lived with her eldest son, Sheldon and his family. In 1997, she moved to Vancouver and lived the last years of her life with her grandson.
Bich Loan is blessed with 10 grandchildren (5 boys and 5 girls) and 3 great-grandchildren (2 boys and 1 girl). She loved children and she was always happy and excited to take care of her grandkids, whenever her children needed help.
She would travel to San Francisco to help take care of Muoi’s two boys every summer, and make sure Muoi did not have to worry about household chores such as laundry and cooking.
She would travel to Vancouver and take care of Jennifer when she had her first child. She would cook her Chinese herbal remedies to help Jennifer's recovery, and look after her newborn while she rested.
She was an amazing cook who loved a variety of foods such as congee, noodles, sushi, fried foods and sweets. She knew her children and grandson would not approve of her sweet tooth so she would secretly hide treats in her room and enjoy them discreetely.
She loved to watch Chinese dramas, enjoyed eating dim sum with her friends and liked to go grocery shopping. Bich Loan was very independent, always insisting on doing things herself.
However, she treasured her time with her kids. Often, she would turn down weekend lunch invitations from her friends to ensure she was able to eat dim sum and go shopping with her kids. She would always be ready to go an hour early, eagerly waiting by the door for her kids to pick her up.
She was well travelled, exploring many parts of Canada, the United States and southeast Asia with her family.
Bich Loan has lived a happy and fulfilling life. She was loved by everyone in her life because she was genuinely kind-hearted and had an infectious positive spirit.
We were blessed to have the most loving, caring, selfless, and easy-going mother and grandmother in the world.
She will be deeply missed by her loved ones and will be forever in our hearts.
