Anne (or “Annie” as she was often called), the youngest of 6 siblings was born and raised in Canton, China. She attended Canton Teachers Training College with her sister Lily where they played on a competitive college baseball team. After the war, her family moved to Hong Kong where she taught preschool.
In September 1956, she married Angus , a Canadian widower with three children and returned with him to Vancouver, arriving October 1956. The next few decades were busy ones. In addition to Angus's first three children, Anne and Angus raised another four children as well as ran a grocery store in West Point Grey. The Mew household was a dynamic one, as true to Chinese tradition, the family household would include Anne's mom and many other family members. Back then the household bubble was much larger than your typical Canadian household of today and Anne was the Mew Matriarch.
As an empty nester, Anne channeled her energy into keeping the family connected through family gatherings and organizing regular social mah jong events. She also had time to indulge in one of her favorite pastimes, watching the world series.
Anne moved to Brock Fahrni in January 2019. Family was extremely important for Anne and the tradition of weekly family gatherings continued when she moved to Brock Fahrni, until the pandemic made it impossible for the family to get together. The alcove and the outdoor gardens were well known for being the sites of many Mew family gatherings, complete with the family dogs.
A “leap day baby”, Anne celebrated her 97th birthday just a week before she fell ill, and she died peacefully after a short time receiving palliative care. Anne was the last of her generation, pre-deceased by husband Angus and her siblings. She is survived by her children Daphne, Alice (Don), Cynthia (Rick) and Winston, Angus's children Jock and Florence, and her grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler, Miranda, Jessica, Samantha, and Gabrielle.
We are deeply grateful for the exceptional, caring, and compassionate staff at Brock Fahrni Residential care home during her stay and to the support that we received during the pandemic when we were able to resume our regular visits virtually and through the window in the lobby.
Due to Covid 19, funeral services will not be held. In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted as a tribute to her life and in support of Brock Fahrni through the St. Pauls Foundation. http://donate.helpstpauls.com/goto/AnneYuenGieMew
A celebration of her life will be planned later during the year once restrictions are lifted.
