John M. Peebles, 92, of Burbank, California, husband of Frances Peebles, joined his relatives in Heaven on April 10, 2023. John is survived by his wife, Frances, and sons, Charles F. Peebles of Falls of Rough, KY; Macdonald “Mac” Peebles of Northridge, CA, and John F. Peebles, of Burbank, CA. He is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Jaymi and Jordan “J.T.” Peebles and Jeremiah “Remi” and Yonah Peebles, and two great grandchildren, Logan and Reagan McDaniel.
Birth, Parents, Sisters; John was born in Stamford, CT on May 21, 1930, son of Charles and Agnes Peebles. John was the middle child with older sister, Louise P. Winter, and younger sister, Millicent Nystrom.
High School and Hobbies; John graduated in 1948 from Stamford High School, where he enjoyed playing soccer and tennis. He also really enjoyed golf and skiing.
Work; John worked as pressman at Conde Nast Publications in Connecticut. Aso during his career, his work also took him to two west coast spots, San Francisco and Seattle. Upon moving to California in 1970, John worked as an offset pressman at the Hollywood Reporter for over 20 years.
Marine Corps; John was drafted during the Korean War and proudly served as a United States Marine from 1952 to 1954, in various capacities, including Rifle Instructor and as a member of the Military Police. He was never deployed overseas. He sometimes filled in as a “dog catcher” when needed, stories about which his family enjoyed very much.
Fran and John - Marriage; John and Frances met on the tennis courts of Stamford, where they started all games at Love/Love, but it was not until several years later, when Fran was working in Hawaii as a dental hygienist and John was working in Seattle, that they decided to get married. John and Fran were married in Hawaii on May 18, 1968. John and Fran were fortunate to enjoy almost 55 years of marriage!
California, Coaching, Community; John and Frances, along with baby Charlie, moved to California in 1970 and then, this time with Mac and John in tow, moved to Burbank in 1976. As his children grew, he enjoyed teaching his sons and other children by coaching and refereeing soccer and coaching baseball. Mr. Peebles also served his sons and the community by serving as Cubmaster for Burbank Cub Scout Pack 252 for several years. In recognition of his service to the McKinley Elementary School community, John received a Honorary Service Award. After retiring, John enjoyed serving as a “Time to Read” mentor for students at Jordan Middle School (Now Dolores Huerta Middle School.)
Hobbies and Glenwood; John was very happy to be known amongst the neighborhood for being a friendly neighbor, who often offered oranges, lemons, grapefruit, zucchini, tomatoes and whatever else grew well that year in his extensive garden. Visits with John could grow quite informative and enjoyable, if one asked him for advice on how to have such a productive garden. Amongst his sons, he was also known for repeatedly “teaching” them how “mulching” made for excellent gardening soil. For a few years, John grew giant pumpkins, which were used as Halloween decorations. Often times, John would also make and distribute zucchini bread and pumpkin bread. Mr. Peebles, who grew up during the Great Depression and WWII, believed in growing produce which could be eaten, not just decorative, though many things he grew were both edible and beautiful! He also very much enjoyed keeping up on how his three nieces and six nephews were doing and visiting them when he could, including multiple summer cross country family road trips in a red and white VW Bus to Connecticut and Florida.
Ending; One of John’s relatives, Annie Cunningham, remarked in her card to Frances, “He lived, and laughed, and loved, and left.” John left his loved ones with many good memories and life lessons, and he will be missed.
