1928-2016
Donald Leroy Newton was born in Aurora, Ill., July 1928, and peacefully passed away in Sun Valley, Calif., on October 29, 2016.
Don was a graduate of Marmion Academy in Aurora. Following his two years of Army service during the Korean War, Don worked as skilled tool-and-die maker in Aurora. In the 1950s, he met and married his beloved sweetheart, Dorothy Hess. In the late 1960s, Don moved his family to Burbank, Calif., continuing his career as a tool-and-die maker. He and Dorothy retired to Oakhurst, Calif., where he loved to work his land.
Don was devoted to his family and active in his church, community and children’s schools in Aurora, Burbank and Oakhurst. Don and Dorothy enjoyed many years of camping, RV’ing and square dancing. He had a “rye” sense of humor and liked to catch you off-guard with a joke or a “Norm Crosby” invented word. Don was also a life-long member of the Knights of Columbus. In 1994, Don was recognized by Pope John Paul II for his volunteer work in helping to build Our Lady of the Sierra Catholic Church in Oakhurst.
Don is survived by his wife, Dorothy; seven children, Charles Boerstler and wife, Tiffany; George Boerstler and wife, Delores; Mieshell Boerstler (widow of Raymond Boerstler); Robert Boerstler and wife, Betsy; Linda Newton and husband, Robert Bengtson; Debra Newton; Shari (Newton) O’Sullivan and husband, Kevin; Daniel Newton and wife, Charlotte; siblings Earl Newton, JoAnn (Newton) Arnold, Rosemary (Newton) Tinsley; Richard Newton; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was an adoring husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend who will be deeply missed.
Parents, Leroy and Angeline Newton; siblings, Betty (Newton) Barbel, Marilyn (Newton) Carter and Jack Newton; and son, Raymond Boerstler preceded him in death.
His family would like to express its deepest appreciation to the entire staff, sisters and clergy at Villa Scalabrini Retirement Center for their amazing support and care of Don and his wife, Dorothy.
