He was born in Lipan, Texas on July 8, 1931 to Iona and Roy V. Simmons, Sr. Roy served in the Air Force as an Airman First Class from 1951 to 1955 with his last assignment at Bryan Air Force Base. Upon completion of his military service, he started his 42-year banking career in 1955 as a cashier at City National Bank in Bryan, retiring in 1997 as Senior Vice President of Consumer Lending at Norwest Bank (now Wells Fargo) in Bryan.
Roy was active in the Bryan/College Station community during his career at the bank, belonging to the Elks Lodge #859, Bryan Noon Lions Club, Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce, and the American Legion Post 159. He supported the United Way and youth programs in the community, including serving on the board of the Boys and Girls Club of Brazos Valley.
Until recent years, Roy enjoyed deer and dove hunting as well as golf. He will always be remembered for his optimism, sense of humor and love of people and life. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois Simmons; and his sister, Ruthe Thompson.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Janette and Mike Alford of League City; sons and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Pamela Simmons of Bryan and Steven Simmons of College Station; his sister, Mary Brown of Sugar Land; his grandchildren, Taylor and Kyle Simmons of Bryan; and his companion, Rebecca Mayer of Buckholts.
A viewing will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Memorial Funeral Chapel in College Station. A funeral service and mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 29th at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bryan, with Msgr. John McCaffrey of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church officiating, and Clyde Larrabee of First United Baptist Church in Navasota assisting. The interment at Rest-Ever Memorial Park Cemetery in Bryan will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, MD Anderson Cancer Center or Compassionate Care Hospice of Bryan.
