Alice Nell Mabry Hartleib completed her life on Earth and went to her heavenly home on Monday, January 18, 2021. The family would like to express sincere gratitude for the compassionate and dedicated care provided by the staff at Baylor Scott and White hospital in College Station, TX.
Throughout her life and career Nell has been a teacher. Her professional career began as a public school teacher in Freer, Texas when she was just a few years older than some of the high school students at her campus. After stepping away from the classroom for a while to focus on motherhood, Nell returned to teaching full time and then returned to the classroom as a student herself. After earning her Master’s Degree, Nell transitioned out of the classroom and into educational administration. In all of her roles, Nell remained a teacher at heart. She encouraged, supported, challenged, and impacted students and fellow teachers alike.
Nell taught outside of the school classroom as well. With her love of the Lord a strong and guiding force, Nell has been an active member of her church wherever she lived. At Missouri Street Church of Christ in Baytown, TX she taught ladies classes and led many retreats. Along with her husband Skip, and other couples, she provided loving guidance to the youth group for several years. Over the past decade, Nell has served in many ways at the A&M Church of Christ in College Station, TX. She taught, mentored, and served with her whole heart. Her involvement and leadership in Community Bible Study drew all those she served alongside closer to God. The number of people impacted by Nell’s life and legacy, by her love of the Lord and others, is surely too high to count.
Sweet Nell’s passing leaves a hole in this life felt by many people. Nell loved and was loved deeply. Her devoted husband Skip, and adoring children, Matt and Sarah, were at her side in her final moments. Her children’s spouses, Kara and Easy, were more than just in-laws to her, they were her daughter and son “in love.” Her grandchildren, Paris, Tripp, Vivian, Hank, and Joia, will miss their Graggie. Nell’s sister Susan and her family in California loved Nell deeply and mourn her passing. Nell’s extended family and “friends that are family” share in the grief that the end of her life on earth brings. All who knew Nell, if even for just a season or moment, are saddened by her death but rejoice with her in her eternal life with Jesus. They take heart in the knowledge that she has reached the destination she sought her entire life. She is sitting at the Lord’s feet praising Him.
