Myrtle Anne Dethloff, age 89, of College Station, Texas passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023. Myrtle Anne was born in Zwolle, Louisiana on March 5, 1934, to the late Grover Elliott and Delma McDonald. Myrtle Anne (or MA as many of her friends referred to her) was a terrific mother to her two sons, Clay and Carl. She was strict, yet kind, and cared deeply about her family. Her greatest love was her husband of 57 years, the late Dr. Henry C. Dethloff. They were simply inseparable. Henry and Myrtle Anne were married on August 27, 1961, and started their life together in Lafayette, Louisiana. As stories were told, MA didn’t miss many social interactions as a young adult and both she and Henry lived up to the mantra “Laissez les bons temps rouler,” or as we say in Texan “Let the good times roll.”
After relocating to College Station in 1969, Mrs. Dethloff made certain that Carl and Clay, and their friends, followed the rules while growing up under her supervision. She stayed busy volunteering as a den mother in Cub Scouts, substituting as a school nurse, and supporting youth sports. Myrtle Anne was also a good athlete growing up. In fact, that trend continued later in life as one of her highlights was running for three touchdowns as a 45-year-old mom during the parents versus kids’ flag football game in 1979. She was deeply passionate about her interests, which included taking money from her grandkids in the Louisiana card game, Bourre¢. She instilled in her family a sense of responsibility and hard work. She will forever be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Myrtle Anne was devoted to her faith and read her Bible daily. She and Henry were members of First United Methodist Church in Bryan and active in their Sunday School class for 50 years. They cherished the strong relationships they built with their church family. Myrtle Anne also enjoyed playing in multiple weekly bridge groups with dear friends. Another favorite past time was bowling in a women’s league for two decades. She was blessed with many close friends that she adored and held dear the memories of the vacations spent with them.
Myrtle Anne is preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, brother and four sisters. She is survived by her sons, Clay Elliott Dethloff and wife Kelly; Carl Henry Dethloff and wife Judy; and eight grandchildren, Brian Dethloff and wife Katie; Stephen Dethloff and wife Sarah; Brittany Dethloff Kyle and husband Kenny; Chris Dethloff and wife Shaye; Cole Dethloff and wife Kira; Riley Dethloff; Abbey and Caroline Dethloff and twelve great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, at First Methodist Church in Bryan, Texas.
The family extends much appreciation to the many friends, family, and medical professionals who provided support and care for her, including Hospice of San Angelo, Comfort Keepers of San Angelo, Silverstone Hospice of Dallas, and the physicians and medical communities of the Brazos Valley and San Angelo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her name may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, 1933 University Avenue, San Angelo, Texas 76904.
