Mildred was born May 27, 1934 the daughter of Ben and Hannah (Kemper) Richter in Brenham. She was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church, growing up on the family farm just minutes down the road. Mildred graduated from Brenham High School in 1953 and worked at a local jewelry store in downtown Brenham. She married Carol Henry Hendrix upon Carol’s return from US Navy service on October 14, 1956 at Salem Lutheran Church in Brenham. They soon moved to Bryan where Carol took a job with the Texas Highway Department and began their family. They celebrated together 45 years of marriage in 2001.
Mildred and Carol were long time members of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in College Station, where she was actively involved in the Miriam Women’s Circle, and served on various church committees including stewardship and treasury committees and will be remembered for making the best tea for church events. Until her recent illness in December 2014, Mildred coordinated the distribution of the church’s email prayer chain, from her home computer.
Mildred was very involved in the PTA of Ben Milam Elementary School in Bryan, Texas, where all her children attended. She retired in 1994 with Bryan ISD after 17 years of service as a local coordinator of the free and reduced lunch program at Ben Milam, and worked in the district offices. Mildred was a voting precinct chairman, Precinct 14 of Brazos County, coordinating yearly elections. She was recognized for 10 years of service to the Brazos County Democratic Party Executive Committee. Mildred and Carol had a passion for community service and volunteered their retirement time to the Brazos Food Pantry, which Mildred continued to volunteer after Carol’s passing in 2002.
Mildred continued to live independently for 12 years until mid December 2014. She resided at St. Joseph Manor working to rehabilitate a broken ankle for six months, and had moved into her apartment home at assisted living at Broadmoor Place in Bryan. She spent quality time with her children and grandchildren along with community and life long friends. Mildred was a strong woman of faith and humility that kept her spirits high throughout her medical journey in 2015. Mildred claimed to live just one day at a time, and will be remembered for her strength and the love and dedication she had for her grandchildren.
Mildred enjoyed RV camping with Carol, traveling to Thousand Trails campsites throughout the state. Mildred loved watching sports, and was an avid Texas Rangers baseball fan, and Dallas Cowboys football fanatic. Mildred could carry on an in-depth conversation concerning team rosters and game results with anyone that enjoyed it as well.
In efforts for Mildred to be able to communicate to her family and friends while living without easy access to her home computer, she adapted to texting and communicating with her smartphone. Caregivers and medical staff, along with friends and family, were impressed with her texting skills and how easily she embraced modern technology at 81 years old.
Mildred is preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Hannah Richter; husband, Carol Henry Hendrix; and her brothers, Ben Richter, Jr., and Walter Richter.
She leaves to cherish in her memory her sons David Hendrix of Missouri City, Glen Hendrix of Sugar Land; daughter Cheri Hendrix Blankenship and husband Dean of Missouri City; grandchildren, Chloe Grace Blankenship, Alec Dean Blankenship, and Breck Ann Blankenship; sister-in-law Dorothy Richter of Richmond; nieces Ann Reed and Gail Terry; nephew Paul Richter.
Memorials may be made to Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 1001 Woodcreek Drive, College Station, TX 77845.
