Marjorie Jean Dugan Clifton died peacefully on April 10, 2024, just months shy of her 103rd birthday. Marjorie was born in Greenville, TX on August 21,1921, the tenth of eleven children. She lost her father at 2 years old and helped her Mamma care for her siblings, including her handicapped sister, Virginia, until leaving home at 13 to help support the family. She worked at the restaurants of the Baird family, with whom she lived (and loved like her own family), until she met and married her husband, OB Clifton, in 1947. They moved to Bryan where OB studied at A&M and joined the Agricultural Extension Service.
Marjorie was a kind, hardworking, patient and empathetic woman, who was adored by all who knew her. She made it easy for anyone around her to be abundantly themselves, and to feel accepted and loved. She would sit patiently listening to the stories, problems and heartache of anyone who felt compelled to share with her. And, even with the most challenging personalities or ideologies, she would reflect with empathy, and highlight the hardships, then positive qualities that defined that person. It was her gentleness and the safety she created that compelled most who knew her to consider her a friend or family - even if they weren’t related or barely knew her. She is frequently referred to as “a special lady”, and she was.
Marjorie leaves three dedicated sons - Guy, Gaylon and Leslie, and their wives, Karen, Edith and Yolanda, 11 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren- who know her as “Nanny". She also has an abundance of nieces and nephews who remained connected to her. She joins her deceased husband, OB, who she loved and respected deeply, her beloved mother, daddy and siblings, her daughter-in-law, Lucy, and her grandson, Grant. Marjorie modeled faith in God, modesty, hard-work, tolerance and kindness with her family. Her home was a place where you could reliably arrive to a warm hug, an open-ended offer to stay, and a homemade pie. She quietly and generously gave her time and care to others in need - whether bringing food and books to homebound friends, or offering a refuge for a struggling family member.
Marjorie was a diehard Aggie and strong believer in access to education. She supported countless family members in their pursuit of their degrees, and her husband, OB, as he pursued his PhD in the A&M Department of Agriculture. She was a dedicated wife, mother and friend to many. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she participated in Sunday school and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She loved living in Bryan, her community of friends and her family. She leaves a legacy of love, tolerance and kindness that her family hopes to carry on. Services will be held this Saturday, April 13th, 10am at the College Station Cemetery - 2530 Texas Ave South, College Station, TX 77840. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your favorite charity.
