Joy was born March 3, 1935 in Ash Community, Houston County, Texas, the daughter of Thomas Dewitt and Claudie Jane (Fuller) Nettles. Raised in the Ash Community, Joy attended school in Austonio and was the Valedictorian of her class at Austonio High School in 1952. She moved to Houston, Texas, soon after graduation and began a career as a secretary. After moving to Houston, she married her high school sweetheart, G.W. “Dub” Taylor. They moved to Bryan, Texas in 1961, where Joy was employed with Texas A&M University. She was especially proud of her 25+ years of service within the Civil Engineering Department where she was able to not only work with the faculty but also support and “mother” numerous graduate students through their studies and research.
Joy enjoyed quilting, playing cards and dominos with family/friends, and was an avid bowler. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Bryan.
Joy is preceded in death by her parents; husband, G.W. “Dub” Taylor; sisters, Clara Nettles, Verne Hopkins, and Reba Keith; brothers, Norman Nettles and Alvin Nettles.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Margaret Kirby Taylor of Liberty; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Charles White of Bryan, and Kelli and Travis McMahan of Burleson; grandchildren, Zachary Taylor, Kirby Taylor, Leah (White) Hunt and husband Justin, Amanda (White) Roeder and husband Wayne, Thomas White and wife Heather, Kyle McMahan and Ross McMahan; great-grandchildren, Kinsey, Korlin, Taylor, Wyatt, Alayla, Thomas, Elijah, Elizabeth and Kimberly; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
