Mac was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi, to Henry C. and Mary M. McQuaide. His mother sent him to Catholic school
at the age of 4 and thus began his education. He graduated from Jacksonville, Texas High School in 1937 and then attended
Texas A&M University for a semester, but was called home to help support the family. He returned to A&M the next year and
was 6 hours from graduation when he was accepted into Baylor College of Medicine in Dallas, Texas in 1941. He did not
receive his Aggie Ring at that time, however, his family surprised him at Thanksgiving 2009 with his Aggie Ring and he wore it
with pride.
He married his High School sweetheart Sara Barber, during Christmas Break on December 26, 1943. In 1944,
at the age of 24, Mac graduated from Medical School. He served in WW II as a Lieutenant in the Navy and then was drafted at
the age of 35 into the Air Force and served an additional term as a Captain in the Korean War. These events led Mac and Sara
to live in various stations throughout the country. His tenure with the Armed Forces ended in 1955.
He became a Board Certified General Surgeon in 1954. In 1956, he moved to Bryan, Texas, became a Fellow of the
American College of Surgeons and set up a surgical practice that spanned 36 years. He was the first board certified specialist
of any type in a seven county area. In 1958 he became the team physician for Texas A&M University, a position he held for 23
years during which he only missed two football games.
During his practice he served multiple times as Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at St. Joseph Hospital. He was one
of six physicians that donated the land on which St. Joseph Hospital & Health Care Center stands today. He was inducted into
the Texas Surgical Society as a fellow in 1974 where he published several articles on the advancement of general surgery and
was a key-note speaker at many meetings.
Mac retired in 1991 and began his second career as a farmer/rancher and outdoorsman. He was an avid hunter and
fisherman, enjoying every aspect of nature and he instilled that love to his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted
member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mac is survived by three children, his son Hank McQuaide and wife Betsi, of Bryan, daughter Carol Eefting and
husband Paul of Dallas, Texas and daughter Kay Hartgroves and husband Thomas of Bryan; grandsons Jacob Hartgroves and
his wife Ashley of Prosper, Texas and Justin Hartgroves of Bryan. He is also survived by his brother Larry of Jacksonville, Texas
and Ocie L. Banks of College Station, Texas, a loyal friend of over 53 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry C. and Mary M. McQuaide, his loving wife Sara, grandson Matthew
McQuaide and his two sisters Kay Boyd & Ann McElyea.
Serving as Pallbearers are Dr. Bert Hart, Thomas Hartgroves, Jacob Hartgroves, Justin Hartgroves, Paul Eefting and
Kyle Shirley. Honorary Pallbearers are Billy Pickard, Dr. John Hall, Dr. E.A. “Dutch” Elmendorf, Dr. Frank “Rusty” Anderson, Dr.
