Gert was born June 24, 1935 in Muskegon, Michigan to Lyle and Florence McNitt. She attended Wheaton College and graduated in 1958 with a degree in Elementary Education. In 1964, Gert met the love of her life, Oscar F. Johnson, at church and they were married in 1965, in Houston, Texas. While they did not have any biological children, Gert and Oscar opened their hearts and home to seven “adopted” children, blessing them with an amazing legacy of 19 grandchildren.
Gert’s love for her Lord and Savior was evident in her faith throughout her life. She and Oscar were always actively engaged in their church wherever they lived. She loved children and spent time over the years teaching Sunday school, Child Evangelism Fellowship, and elementary school.
Gert will forever be remembered by those who knew her for her sweet, kind, and joyful personality. She found wonder and enjoyment in the simplest things in life. She delighted in nature, flowers and collecting rocks. Gert had a deep love of music and was often found singing her beloved hymns perfectly verse by verse. However, her favorite hobby was photography, as evidenced by her volumes of photo albums and many boxes of pictures. In more recent years, Gert and Oscar moved to Snook, Texas, where Gert loved taking walks with her beloved companion, Sweetie Pie.
Gert is survived by her husband of 57 years, Oscar F. Johnson; her dog, Sweetie Pie; her children, Melody Dorman, Patrick Dorman (Eva), Troy Dorman (Brooke), Joy Laird Carroll (Trey), Bilinda Dorman Soto, Ladd Laird (Brandi), Holly Dorman McDonald (Todd); 18 grandchildren; and nieces, Darcy Mullally and Shannon Mullally. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Lureen F. Mullally; and granddaughter, Cora Marian McDonald.
